After becoming "officially" engaged, a lot of questions suddenly needs to be answered. When will we get married? And where? How about the wedding reception venue? Theme? Motif? And the list goes on. Endlessly.
To be honest, I've only been to a weddings myself. I was a bridesmaid twice but I was never really involved in any wedding planning before. We just decided to take it slowly and deal with each concern one at a time. This seems to work for us and greatly aids in the preservation of our sanity.
So the date.
It's the first concern that needed to be addressed because we need to tell people to devote this day exclusively for us. Ian being Ian, we first flirted with the idea of having our wedding date on 12.06.12 (June 12, 2012) for two reasons - the numbers would look good on the invite and it's a holiday. However, on the year 2012, it will fall on a Tuesday and it's not really very romantic to have an Independence Day wedding (at least for me, its not).
We also flirted (very briefly) with the idea to get married on October 19, 2011. But after mulling it over, we found that this is too soon for us. We need time to prepare and to save up for all the wedding expenditures.
We finally decided on having our wedding date on the 19th of October 2012 to coincide with our actual dating anniversary. This would save us from the headache of wondering when we will celebrate our anniversary (because the wedding and dating anniversary date will be the same). :) However, this date falls on a FRIDAY. Hopefully, our guests will feel that we are important enough to sacrifice one day of leave/absence (if not.. friendship over. bwahaha.)
